Harthill Stud was established in 2009 to breed and produce quality event horses for the international market, and to make world class stallions available to UK breeders. In 2014 the company expanded to incorporate the breeding of show jumpers. With both disciplines, Harthill strives to use proven dam lines highly populated with top international performers.
The resident stallion Ramiro B was named 10th best producer of event horses globally in 2014, and is expected to climb higher in the 2015 rankings with offspring such as Ballynoe Castle RM being named the highest earning North American event horse ever, and Cooley SRS, Westwinds Hercules and Tommy B Good all performing very well at 3* level. An exciting generation of Ramiro offspring bred in the UK will emerge in the sport scene in the next two years.
Today Ramiro represents the aims of sport horse production at Harthill – fulfilling the criteria of improving model and temperament as well as selecting for performance. With such a holistic approach to stallion selection, his youngstock have a natural place in the market.
The commerciality of all stock is an important consideration in any breeding programme and Harthill has a ‘breeder development initiative’ to help the UK breeding industry compete commercially. In 2015 a very successful seminar addressed stock selection, management techniques and sale presentation. This was followed by the Bolesworth Elite Yearling Auction in June, which saw a staggering average price for a UK auction, and many of the lots sold abroad. In March 2015 a second education event will develop the idea of successful sale preparation and presentation, and continue the theme of selling British bred horses into the European market. Fences, a major French auctioneer, has agreed to select a horse for their Elite auction during the clinic. Harthill Stud continues to forge new commercial links for the UK sport horse.
